(a) How do you know from the velocity-time graph that the object is accelerating?

The gradient of the line represents the acceleration and the line has a positive gradient - or velocity is increasing with time.

(b) The illustration shows an athlete sprinting away from the starting blocks.

The athlete has a mass of 85 kg. The force causing the athlete to accelerate is 425 N

Calculate the acceleration of the athlete.

F = ma

a = F/m

a = 425/85

a = 5.0 m/s2
