Questions on Energy Sources

Q12.

Energy comes from a variety of sources. Complete the table below. The first one has been done for you.

Energy Resource
Source of enegy
Directly from the Sun
Indirectly from the Sun
Not from the Sun
wind

nuclear

hydro-electric

solar

geothermal

oil

The uranium that is used in nuclear power generation was laid down when the Earth was formed. It does not come from the Sun.

Geothermal energy is the result of the heat generated by the radioactive decay of radioactive nuclei within the Earth. It does not come from the Sun.

The Sun heats the atmosphere unequally. The differences in temperature and presure in the air masses, cause movement of those air masses that we call wind. The wind then blows on the surface of the oceans and causes waves (wave power).

All living (and one-lived) material on Earth is formed via photosynthesis - sunlight energy from the Sun combining carbon dioxide and water into plant material. Ancient fossilised 'once-lived' material makes up the fossil fuels: coal, oil and natural gas.
