In science experiments we like to work in metres per second, but sometimes speeds are given in other units. If the distance is in kilometres and the time in hours it is easy to work out the speed in kilometres per hour. You just divide the distance in kilometres by the time in hours!
You need to show all of the steps of your working out for a high grade in questions. If you only put the correct answers you will only get half marks!
Q1. Calculate the speed (in kilometres per hour) of a car that travelled a distance of 125 kilometres in a time of 2 hours.
Q2. A tennis balll is thrown a distance of 20 metres. What is its speed, in m/s, if it takes 0.5 seconds to cover the
distance?
Q3. How much time does it take for a bird flying at a speed of 45 kilometres per hour to travel a distance
of 1,800 kilometres?
Q4. A comet is cruising through the solar system at a speed of 50,000 kilometers per hour for 4
hours. What is the total distance travelled by the comet during this time?
Q5. A coach wants to find out the speed of the runners on a track team.
- Decide what simple equipment
the coach would need in order to do this and list it.
- Then explain what she should do to get a good set of reliable results (a set of bullet point instructions would be best).
- Finally design the heading for a sheet that she could record her results on, and put that in your notes.
