Newton's Second Law of Motion

Newton's second law of motion states that the net force acting on an object is equal to the rate change of momentum it experiences.

It is this law that gives us the equation

F=ma

It tells us that if an object is experiencing:

a change in momentum

a change in velocity (a change of speed or direction) or

acceleration

there must a be net force acting on the object.
